This chapter covers “grantsmanship” concepts specific to developing a competitive, compelling NIH grant application. We provide data on correlations between individual review criterion scores and overall impact score and go through section by section the most important advice on how to fine-tune each component to make the reviewer’s job as easy as possible. We use sample R01 applications available online to make specific points in preparing the Specific Aims and Research Strategy. We briefly review all components of the application, from the cover letter to the budget.
