This chapter reviews the various categories of funding mechanisms (research project, research program, career development, training, small business, etc.) and provides details and hints on when to select which mechanism and how to frame the application. While advice throughout the book can all be applied to the R01 mechanism and most NIH applications, special tips on individual mechanisms are found here, as are FY12 data on overall submissions and success rates. We also briefly address administrative supplements and bridge funding.
