The Office of Extramural Research (OER), which is part of the Office of the Director, is responsible for funding and policy announcements as well as maintaining overall NIH grant policy. We explain the different types of funding announcement opportunities (FOAs) and how to search for and select the most appropriate announcement for the reader’s career status and research. The reader will learn and see examples in how to use OER data resources, such as Project RePORTER, to enhance his or her grant strategy. We briefly cover NIH grant policy and eRA Commons, the electronic interface through which all grant management occurs.
