This chapter moves on from the NIH as a whole to explain how each Institute and Center (IC) operates in common but also how they differ in style, priorities, and IC-specific policies. We give a brief introduction to the type of extramural staff with whom investigators will interact (and how) as well as the Advisory Councils, which provide the second level of review. We provide a common dataset for each IC to help the reader go straight to the key information needed and include information on funding decisions and funding trends for those ICs that supplied these data. At the end of each section, we include links to other relevant resources beyond the common dataset.
