This chapter addresses one of the most stressful periods for an investigator: the weeks just before and after a study section reviews the grant application. We explain how and why to interact with the scientific review officer before the study section meeting (including the submission of postsubmission materials) and when and how to interact with the program officer after the study section meeting. We discuss again the role of the Advisory Council and explain why appeals are rarely a good idea (but how to proceed if one is warranted). The reader will learn what to expect during the administrative review and award processing phase as well.
