Oncologists must repeatedly give bad news over the course of a day. How to communicate bad news to patients, how to handle the difficult questions about their shortened survival and, how to respond to patients' anger or tears are challenging issues. Being able to communicate information clearly, and in a kind and sensitive manner and to listen empathically is the hallmark of the good physician. This chapter provides an approach to effective communication that is simple and readily applied.
