Hypertension affects 50 million people in the United States. Systolic blood pressure more than 115 mm Hg increases the risk for stroke and coronary artery disease. For every 20 mm Hg increase in systolic blood pressure, the risk doubles. This chapter has four goals: cite the classification of hypertension and list the steps in initial evaluation of a patient with hypertension; define an approach to selecting treatment for a patient with hypertension; identify secondary causes of hypertension, including pheochromocytoma, primary aldosteronism, and renovascular hypertension; and recognize special cases of hypertension, including pregnancy and hypertensive crisis.
