This chapter reviews common psychiatric illnesses and emphasizes diagnosis and management. Since 30% to 40% of ambulatory primary care visits have a psychiatric component, successful patient management often hinges on successful treatment of comorbid psychiatric illness. This chapter has three goals: recognize common psychiatric disorders encountered by internists (mood disorders, anxiety disorders, somatoform disorders, factitious disorders, malingering, delerium, dementia, eating disorders, and substance abuse); cite typical clinical scenarios of common psychiatric disorders; and summarize pharmacologic interventions for common psychiatric disorders.
