Many systemic diseases may have manifestations in the heart. This section describes those that are most likely to be included on the board examination. Clinical findings can be easily misinterpreted by examiners who are unfamiliar with normal changes of pregnancy. Some cardiovascular conditions likely to be addressed on the board examination are not covered elsewhere in this section. This chapter has three goals: describe the cardiac manifestations of systemic diseases, review normal cardiac changes of pregnancy and the interaction of cardiac conditions with pregnancy, and summarize miscellaneous cardiac disorders.
