About one in ten of all school age children have ADHD, DCD, ASD, IDD, Tourette syndrome (or combinations of these) or another major problem/disorder subsumed under the ESSENCE category. Boys are affected more frequently than girls, but underdiagnosis in females is common. There is a highly significant degree of “comorbidity” across the ESSENCE group of disorders, not least in terms of learning difficulties/academic problems and mental/psychiatric disorders. ADHD/DAMP/ESSENCE is one of the major public health issues of our time.
