ADHD/DAMP and other ESSENCE are often caused by genetic factors, more rarely by brain damage/dysfunction sustained during early development, and, perhaps quite commonly, by an interaction of the two. Social factors, particularly within the family and school, contribute in many cases to the development of some additional mental/psychiatric disorders, but probably not to the “ADHD per se”.
