Interventions that promote mental health and prevent the onset of mental disorders are important to reduce the rising burden of mental disorders globally, as well as escalating treatment costs. This chapter highlights how these interventions are inextricably linked to the Millennium Development Goals. Adopting a socio-ecological and competency enhancement approach, a framework for planning mental health promotion and prevention interventions is provided. Using a lifespan developmental approach, the chapter provides an overview of the risk and protective factors from prenatal development through to old age. For each life stage, an overview of distal policy interventions needed is provided, as well as more specific mental health promotion and primary prevention interventions to build resilience.
