Recent advances and new developments in genomics research provide the opportunity to characterize many new genes with unknown function, hitherto uncharacterized previously unknown genes and many genomic variants to be involved in complex biological processes such as in immunology. Besides a more detailed understanding in basic processes in immunology, microarray studies have increased our insight in the immunological mechanisms that contribute to chronic immune-related diseases. Of particular interest is the overlap of genes identified in these diseases with genes that are induced in response to a microbial stimulus. Moreover, genome-wide studies have provided evidence for the existence of genetically determined differences in immune activity that might have consequences for susceptibility and/or outcome of immune-related diseases. Large scale gene-expression and genome-wide analysis is of great relevance in the field of immunology to generate a global view of how the immune systems attacks invading microorganisms, maintains tolerance, or creates a memory for past infections. The exciting part of microarray studies is that the many data points that are generated give rise to unpredictable and unexpected results, which may lead to new insights in immunology.
