Chapter 4 focuses on perioperative stroke in noncardiac and noncarotid procedures, making comparisons to the cardiac surgery population when relevant. Acute thrombolysis following postoperative stroke will be briefl y discussed, although at present the utility of this therapy remains limited because of potential hemorrhagic complications in the postsurgical patient. Stroke aft er neurosurgical procedures will not be discussed.
