Although the major manifestation of specific learning disability (SLD) is the disturbance of school performance, these conditions are not simply academic handicaps. Specific learning disabilities encompass almost all aspects of a chronic neurological disorder, and affect all aspects of the youngster’s life, in and out of school. Other than the academic difficulties, social and emotional manifestations may be the most important manifestations of SLD. Children with learning disabilities exhibit a wide range of possible emotional and behavior disturbances. In addition to the frequent comorbidity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), children with SLD are more likely to exhibit increased levels of anxiety, withdrawal, depression, and low self-esteem compared with their nondisabled peers.
