Phytomedicines for the treatment of pain have a broader mechanism of action than nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They interact at different targets within the inflammatory and chondrodestructive cascades. The willow bark extract active principle differs from that of aspirin as does its adverse event profile. Cochrane systematic review and meta-analyses of randomized controlled studies on phytomedicines for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis revealed that convincing evidence of effectiveness was not yet obtained for any of the phytomedicines but data are encouraging to do further clinical studies of high quality including a confirmatory study design.
