A 34-year-old woman is pregnant with her third child. Her two previous pregnancies were normal, and she had vaginal deliveries at term. Her 7-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter are both in good health, developing normally, and meeting all developmental milestones. The patient's prenatal visits with her obstetrician were uneventful, and an ultrasound that was done at 10 weeks of gestation appeared normal.
