Case 24 introduces a 73-year-old retired carpenter with severe shortness of breath (dyspnea) and great difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia). The patient states that for the past 6 months he has suffered increasing difficulty in swallowing solid foods, and over the past 2 weeks, difficulty swallowing liquids which is frequently accompanied by coughing. His diet has been increasingly limited, and he reports losing 30 pounds. During the past week, he has become increasingly short of breath, and this has affected his daily activity.
