Physical activity has many proven health benefits including lowering the risk of most of the most common causes of mortality and morbidity among men. Obesity and cardiovascular disease are especially attenuated by regular exercise. While physical activity is key to optimal health, the weekend warrior does put himself at risk of overuse syndromes such as tendinopathies, Iliotibial band syndrome, fasciitis, stress fractures and shin splints. Steroids pose substantial risk when used inappropriately for athletic performance enhancement, but supplements such as creatine, DHEA and branched chain amino acids can be safely used for such purposes.
