Mind body medicine includes the ways in which thoughts, emotions and behavior impact physical health. There have been many studies showing the impact of stress on physical health dating back hundreds of years. The stress response involves specific hormonal changes involving the sympathetic nervous system and adrenal gland, with chronic stress causing especially contributing to ill health effects. Chronic stress increases risk for cardiovascular disease and is correlated with poor prostate health. Various mind body modalities can be used to take advantage of this connection including meditation, biofeedback and hypnosis.
