This chapter on bone health looks through the prism of “Integrative Rheumatology”, refocusing old paradigm constructs and creating new templates by which men’s health may be impacted in rheumatic disease prevention as well as the conventional approach of focusing on treatment.

This chapter reviews options for treating and preventing osteoarthritis, osteoporosis in men. The latter a condition rarely recognized unto relatively recently and still vastly under diagnosed and treated. Integrative modalities, including TCM, homeopathy, and physical medicine disciplines are all reviewed for both chronic and acute forms of arthritis. The various types of inflammatory arthritis are discussed including the roles of the microbiome, functional medicine, anti-inflammatory Mediterranean and Paleolithic diets. Food sensitivities critical supplements, botanicals, and strategic vitamins needed to reduce oxidative stressors and systemic inflammation are reviewed. The role of mind-body interventions (meditation, breath work, yoga, TaiChi) on the immune response are woven into this whole body approach. The integration of appropriate exercise and rheumatic pain control are also discussed. Finally, bone health and osteoporosis prevention and treatment are reviewed in the context of men’s health. The roles of male hormones, Vitamin D, specific bone markers to follow therapeutic responses, fall prevention, CNS age changes, and lifelong flexibility training are all emphasized in this Integrative Rheumatology chapter.
