Chapter 2 discusses the many intersections between psychiatric and medical disorders and their treatments, and how optimal care of older patients with psychiatric disorders is best accomplished by close collaboration between behavioral health and medical specialists, paying close attention to awareness of the patient’s medical problems and medication regimen, as well as how medical primary care providers should be attentive to the effects of psychiatric disorders on the presentation and course of medical disorders, and the potential side effects and drug-drug interactions of the medications prescribed by the psychiatrists.
