The focus of the following chapters of this handbook is to provide a summary of current knowledge of best practices. This will cover early intervention, educational and adult services, as well as psychosocial treatments and psychopharmacology. The primary focus will be on practices where there is ample research support. There has been considerable emphasis in recent years regarding the use of evidence-based practices in many fields. Two reports (National Autism Center’s National Standards Project and Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services with the Maine Department of Education, 2009) offer updated information to both parents and professionals and provide a standardized method with which to judge and compare treatments in the field of ASD.
