Chapter 1 discusses the history of the neurobiological understanding of white matter, and the concept of subcortical dementia, which has provided an organizing framework for considering cerebral white matter disorders. It then discusses how the white matter may be interpreted as a participant in higher cerebral function. Finally, it demonstrates how no conception of the brain as the organ of the mind can exclude the white matter and its many and varied disorders.
