This chapter builds on statistical principles introduced in chapter 1. The determination of appropriate statistical methods depends on 4 questions: 1) What is the type of data? 2) Are observations dependent or independent? 3) What data distribution assumptions can be made? 4) How many variables are being investigated? Observations can be continuous, categorical, or measurements with censoring. If each observation in the first group has a corresponding observation in the second, samples are paired and observations are dependent. When underlying populations of 2 compared groups are completely different, the samples are independent. Data can be normally distributed or nonparametric. Bivariable analysis explores the association between 2 variables; multivariable analysis explores the association between a response and multiple variables.
