This textbook on palliative social work is a companion volume to the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine and the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing. To that end, this chapter will accomplish the following:

There are important values and behaviors that are integral to the palliative care of patients and families in a different culture. Social workers need to respect patients' and family's values while offering opportunities to consider alternate ideas and values that might help patients and families living with serious illness and coming to the end of life.

Culturally respectful palliative social work practice for Chinese patients empowers and supports them and their families in ways they consider appropriate. A practice model called SET & GO, which contains the themes of surviving the stress of impending death, empowering individuals, transforming the experience of loss into personal and spiritual growth, and setting goals in life for bereaved people to go on with life, is proposed.
