This textbook on palliative social work is a companion volume to the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine and the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing. To that end, this chapter will accomplish the following:

The historic legacy of the Project on Death in America (PDIA) Social Work Leadership Award program launched many projects that have enhanced the contribution of social work to palliative and end-of-life care.

Included in this legacy is the development of the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network (SWHPN).
