Case 12d: A 68-year-old woman from Puerto Rico presented with several days of shaking chills, weakness, watery diarrhea, arthralgias, and malaise. The pain had been in prominent in the joints of her fingers, and was accompanied by warmth, redness, and swelling on the day prior to admission. Her past medical history included insulin-requiring diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia. The patient was a smoker, but denied any intravenous drug use, travel, recent antibiotic use, or sexual activity.
