Chapter 19 covers landmark papers in clinical epidemiology in nephrology, and includes observational studies information about chronic kidney disease (CKD) in settings other than renal replacement therapy. In particular, a major public health advance has been the recognition that apparently small decrements in kidney function are important markers of adverse events including death, cardiovascular disease, and hospitalization; Eight of these landmark studies are based on dialysis populations, one on both dialysis and transplant populations, and one applies to CKD in the general population.
