This chapter addresses issues related to costing the use of medical services in trials. Specific issues addressed include the relative strengths and weaknesses of use of national versus centre-specific price weights (unit costs) to value service use, accuracy of national tariffs, updated material on readily available sources of price weights, methodological issues related to time and motion studies, and methods for adjusting for inflation (e.g. the consumer price index) and for use of cost data from different countries (e.g. purchasing power parity) and time preference (i.e. discounting).
