This chapter describes the early signs of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the onset of the disease, presenting features, and progression. It discusses the value of assessing motor ability to chart the course of progression, the variation of severity of the disease, and the signs and symptoms of later stages. The chapter also discusses disorders other than muscular dystrophy in affected boys, and concludes with a description of improving survival statistics.
