The history of the disease is an interesting one. Muscular dystrophy has no doubt afflicted humans from the earliest times. This chapter discusses early beginnings, and describes the findings of some of the figures throughout history who have stuided the disorder. The chapter also covers recent developments and landmarks. Based on these various findings, rational new approaches to therapy are beginning to be considered. The prospects are now more hopeful than ever that, in the not too distant future, an effective therapy will be found for this tragic disease.
