The low base rate of suicide imposes constraints on the feasibility of using randomized controlled trials to demonstrate the effectiveness of methods of suicide prevention. Alternative research methodologies can be utilized. An integrated management approach addressing both mental disorders and socio-cultural factors is required, with the relative importance of those approaches depending on the individual and the environment. The Haddon Matrix offers a useful framework within which to operate.
