About 1 million people die by suicide each year. Ten to twenty times that number attempt suicide. Suicide numbers are probably under-reported. There is wide variation of suicide rates both between and within countries. Suicide has increased in younger males in developed countries. Attempted suicide, suicidal ideation, and self-harm have widely varying rates, but they share common antecedents. Findings from epidemiological data cannot necessarily be extrapolated to the individual person.
