Estimates of the prevalence of irritability vary according to its definition. This chapter presents the major studies that have assessed irritability in children and adolescents across countries. It is concluded that children with irritability are more likely to have one or more of a range of psychiatric disorders, including emotional (e.g. depression) and behavioural (e.g. ADHD) disorders when seen in clinics or the community; they are at increased risk for future emotional problems, particularly depression, dysthymia, and generalized anxiety and probably suicidality; they are more likely to show poor social adjustment that is over and above their problems with psychopathology.
