This chapter looks at how the information used to generate a shared mental model can then be used to make sound healthcare decisions. It also explores the barriers that might be encountered during these processes.

By considering the naturalistic approach to decision making, rule-based, recognition-primed, option generation, and creative modes are explored in depth. Examples are compared using emergency clinical, routine clinical, an emerging emergency, and non-clinical episodes.

By exploring some real errors in both diagnostic and treatment decisions, the chapter illustrates some pitfalls that occur in healthcare and offers an awareness of how these might be avoided.
