In the UK, patients with localised gastric cancer are usually offered perioperative chemotherapy and surgery whilst in the USA, surgery followed by adjuvant chemoradiotherapy is the standard of care. The majority of patients with gastric cancer present with or develop advanced disease. Some tumours are HER2/neu+ and may respond to targeted systemic therapy including trastuzumab. The symptoms of peritoneal metastases may be challenging to manage in the terminal phase.
