This chapter describes in detail the aetiology, classification (e.g. Prague C&M criteria), and historic considerations of Barrett’s oesophagus, together with its progression towards oesophageal adenocarcinoma. The chapter then explores the latest evidence on the endoscopic screening and surveillance for Barrett’s oesophagus, including techniques such as unsedated transnasal endoscopy, wireless capsule endoscopy, and capsule sponge. International registries for Barrett’s oesophagus (i.e. population-based and institution-based) are discussed, as well as detailed comparisons between the non-operative (i.e. chemoprevention, minimally-invasive endoscopy therapy) and operative prevention and management of oesophageal dysplasia.
