This chapter describes the gross and microscopic anatomy, blood supply, lymphatic drainage, endoscopic anatomy, innervation and sensation, and motility (i.e. swallowing and peristalsis) of the oesophagus. The lower oesophageal sphincter and its role in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease are also described.
