The lymphatic system is intimately related to the vascular system and particularly the veins. The lymphatics are responsible for absorbing most of the fluid which leaks out of the vascular system. Elevated central venous pressure, congested cardiac failure, soft tissue injury, inflammation, infection, or fragility of the venous system, along with aneurysms, thrombosis, ligation, wsclerosis, and vein harvesting will all impact on the integrity and load on the lymphatic system. There is often little attention given to the lymphatic system and its role in tissue swelling and its sequelae when it is unable to handle the fluid and content load awaiting removal. This chapter aims to inform about the lymphatics, how to minimize damage to the system, and more pertinently how to impact on the load on it and on its effectiveness in helping to maintain tissue homeostasis and cellular well-being through treatment and management strategies.
