In recent years, there have been major advances in non-invasive imaging modalities for vascular pathologies, as well as image guidance for intervention. A thorough understanding of the principles behind each imaging modality allows the selection of the optimum imaging strategies, facilitates interpretation of imaging studies, and enables interventions to be performed safely and effectively. Doppler ultrasound is inexpensive, safe, and provides high spatial and temporal resolution of vessels and vascular pathologies. It is the initial imaging modality used most frequently in vascular surgery Computed tomography angiography and magnetic resonance angiographyhave advantages and disadvantages, but have largely replaced digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for diagnostic arterial imaging. DSA is the imaging modality for endovascular intervention, but is operator-dependent. Radiation safety is paramount when using this modality.
