The question whether mental processes depend from ‘localized’, spatially confined brain regions or result instead from the integrated functioning of the brain as a whole was hotly debated in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The availability of increasingly sophisticated methods to study the brain has allowed contemporary neuroscience to reach the conclusion that both interpretations are in part true. Here we first review the contribution of brain lesion studies and functional imaging to the understanding of functional specialization. Then we discuss recently developed neuroimaging techniques providing evidence of functional and structural connectivity which have led to the concept that the brain operates through large-scale networks.
