In order to mediate antibody functional effects after antigen binding, such as antigen clearance or mobilization of assistance from immune proteins or helper cells, specific segments of isotype constant regions are involved. The exciting events leading to discovery of the multiple components of the complement system and the variety of cell-surface located Fc receptors and their variegated functional roles are described. During more recent times, the detailed structural and functional dissection of antibody constant regions to elucidate the differential sequence and carbohydrate requirements of different classes of Fc receptor is recounted.
