The uncertainties implicit in the theories of Ehrlich, Koch, Bordet, and others were largely due to the absence of any understanding of proteins, their composition, and their structure. The convergence of chemistry, physical chemistry, and the ‘new immunology’ would provide a way forward, if often uncertain, while the key chemical insights of Landsteiner and Heidelberger would lead to the first detailed definitions of blood groups. The physicochemical insights of Arrhenius, Madsen, and others and the arrival of the ultracentrifuge with the breakthrough work of Svedberg at the end of the 1920s, would provide essential tools for unravelling antibody properties that had hitherto been obscured.
