Vertigo is a common symptom, but also one that can indicate serious pathology. CT and MRI play an increasingly important role in assisting the clinician in the accurate diagnosis, and subsequent treatment. Advances in technology mean that imaging studies can now routinely provide excellent anatomical detail of the labyrinth, cranial nerves and brain parenchyma itself. Imaging technology has also provided new insights into the functional anatomy of the vestibular system. Vertigo can arise due to dysfunction of any component of the vestibular system or its neural pathways. Knowledge of the anatomy of these pathways and consideration of the location of the pathology is important in order to select the most appropriate imaging modality and technique. This chapter summarizes the anatomy of the vestibular system and its neural pathways, the imaging techniques available and reviews a number of common or important disorders and their imaging findings.
