Transplantation (Tx) is the treatment of choice for suitable patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) and the only option for renal replacement therapy (RRT) that avoids dialysis. The first successful kidney transplant was performed in Boston, USA in 1954 between identical twins and the first deceased donor (DD) transplant in the UK was in 1960. Since then, advances in clinical practice have improved outcomes, benefiting thousands of patients. Activity is limited by the availability of suitable organs. All UK transplant activity is monitored and recorded by the Directorate of Organ Donation and Transplantation (ODT) at NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).
