A 38-year-old right-handed woman is referred by her GP with pain in her hands, the right more than the left. It started during her first pregnancy and abated after delivery, but returned during the second pregnancy and did not go away. She describes pain in the lateral aspect of the hand, particularly the thumb and some of the fingers, and she feels the hand has been progressively more numb in recent months.
