Endocrinology concerns the diagnosis, and management of patients with diseases effecting hormones and the glands from which they are released. Through the release of hormones, the endocrine system helps coordinate internal homeostasis and orchestrates the organism’s response to an altered external environment. It also regulates development, growth and reproduction. This chapter focuses on the synthesis, release and actions of the main hormonal systems illustrating how common pathological conditions therefore manifest.
