This chapter covers basic anatomy before focusing on both the mechanical and electro-physiology of the heart and the behaviour of blood vessels. This is then combined with a description of how the autonomic nervous system, reflex control and renal regulation integrate to control blood pressure and tissue perfusion both at rest and during exercise and stress. There are special sections dealing directly with the key pathological conditions of hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction and heart failure.
