Chapter 16 covers obstetric anaesthesia, and much of the literature involving obstetric anaesthesia concerns issues of safety and this chaper includes such seminal papers. The confidential enquiries into maternal deaths have contributed much to the improved safety in childbirth both in the UK where it originated and indeed the rest of the world. Otherwise the choice of papers to include in this chapter combines some of the best known names in obstetric anaesthesia and illustrates not only their contribution to improvements in obstetric anaesthesia but also the safety of anaesthesia as a whole.
